THE POWER OF THE TITHE & OFFERING
I know that many of you have a truly generous and giving spirit. It is so great that you have often desired to be a blessing to someone in need or to help with a particular need in your church, but you could not because you simply didn’t have the means to do so. I have good news for you – there is a way to be blessed and be a tremendous blessing to others. It is found in the amazing book of Malachi.
Beginning in chapter 3:7:
Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says Yahweh of Hosts. “But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ Will a man rob God? Yet you rob Me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with the curse; for you rob Me, even this whole nation. Bring the whole tithe into the store-house, that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says Yahweh of hosts, “if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough for. I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast its fruit before its time in the field,” says Yahweh of Hosts. “All nations shall call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land,” says Yahweh of Hosts.
This is the only place in the entirety of Scripture where God issues this kind of challenge, where He actually says “Test Me; prove Me.”
What is your tithe? It is the first 10% of your increase. It is your first and best.
What is your storehouse? It is your local church, the house to which you have been called, the house to which you have been joined. If you don’t have a church, find one. If you have stayed away because of the hypocrisy go ahead and join yourself to a church anyway, it can handle one more. Some of you are sending your tithes and offerings to TV ministries or others that are not churches. But that is not your storehouse. Call that ministry and see if they will come to visit you when you are hospitalized, or if they will officiate for the funeral of your loved one or preside over the wedding of your child. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t give to these ministries. Just don’t expect them to be there when you need them.
If that isn’t provocative enough for you, consider this: tithing makes you legal. In much the same way that the Blood of Christ gives us the legal right to enter into the Holy of Holies, so tithing gives us the legal right to approach Almighty God and request His divine help and intervention in our time of need. Of course, anyone can come to God at anytime, whether they tithe or not. But when a tithing man or woman comes to Him He is obligated to act because of His own irrevocable Word: Prove Me! He promises to pour out such a blessing that we will not be able to contain it. There will be more than enough to bless those in need around us, and there will be plenty left over!
Tithing is not a guarantee that bad things will not happen. But when those things do happen tithers have the divine and legal right to call out to Yahweh for His help and provision, and He has promised to bless us as individuals and as a nation.
I saw a great billboard not long ago. It said “Save America. Start to tithe.”
Yahweh gave us His very First and Best when He gave His son to pay the awful price of our sin. Can we do any less for Him?
Bring all your tithes, your first and best, into the storehouse, and you will be wonderfully blessed. Yahweh says so.
So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
Freely you have received; freely give.
