Writing about the Return of Christ is big business – and business is good. I just took a look at Amazon.com and found that there are currently 35,718 results for books about the Return of Christ. Of course, this has been going on a long time. In 1988 Edgar C. Whisenant wrote and published a book entitled “88 Reasons Why the Rapture Will Be in 1988.” It sold 4.5 million copies. When Christ didn’t return in 1988 he wrote another book: “The Final Shout: Rapture Report 1989” prophesied that the Return of Christ would occur in 1989. It didn’t sell as well as its predecessor but , believe it or not, it did OK.
What is it in the human nature that compels men to devote such efforts to determining the Return of our Savior? Could it simply be that these men know that another part of our nature is go gullible that we will purchase these things without questioning, and, therefore, there’s a lot of money to be made?
Here’s the point that I want to make: no one knows the day or the hour of Christ’s Return. No one! No prophet, no theologian, no angel, NOT EVEN CHRIST HIMSELF!
Let us allow Christ to speak for Himself:
“No one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son Himself. Only the Father knows.” Matthew 24:36, NLT, emphasis added.
There it is. What more can be said? The day and the hour of Christ’s Return is known only by the Father. It is one of those extraordinary things reserved for Yahweh.
So what should our response be? A lot of people are waiting, but not all are ready. Ten virgins were waiting for the bridegroom to appear, but only five were ready when the much-anticipated moment arrived. The others were not permitted to enter the feast and participate in the joyous occasion. When these foolish ones knocked and cried out for permission to enter the Lord said, “I don’t know you.” (Matthew 25:12). Wow. This instantly reminds me of the Sermon on the Mount when Yahshua taught that many of those who recognize Him on “that Day” will hear the very same words: “I don’t know you.” (Matthew 7:23).
All this time we have been asking people the wrong question. Instead of asking “Do you know Jesus?” we should be asking “Does Jesus know you?”
Christ is coming back – about that there can be no question or debate. No one knows the day or hour, not even Him. THE TIMING OF THIS EVENT IN KNOWN ONLY TO YAHWEH! So we must be vigilant and watching.
In the meanwhile, the next time some slick prognosticator produces a glossy new book that promises some great new revelation about the Return of Christ save your money and do something really important with it, like buy an ice cream cone.
Be vigilant, be watchful, be obedient and be blessed!
